* Beamish Plough Match 2009

Picture by kind permission Motorman Tel’s Flickr Site

Usually only a Horse ploughing match, this year Beamish decide to show what replaced horses on the farm. Enter me. I was asked to demonstrate using the museums TE-A20 (TVO converted) Ferguson and my 2 Furrow plough. I had so much fun. A big thank you to Beamish for letting me be there.

The day started very much earlier than the opening picture. I Had travelled up from Sheffield the day before and spent the evening chatting to the plough match competitors. I was told it was a very friendly sort of an event.  At about 7:30am I made my way to where the tractor was stored. Why did I get up so early when the ploughing didn’t star until 10:30am. I had to build my plough before I could use it.

Armed only with two trusty Ferguson spanners and a pot of grease It took about an hour to put the whole thing back together. I’m glad I remembered to  take a couple of pictures of it all assembled to know how to reassemble it from pieces.

Not bad for £75 Well that’s what I paid for it originally. I’d struggle to get one as good for £275 now. The mouldboards and skimmers and coulters are covered in grease from the last time I used the plough It is not rust on them.

Ferguson Tractor Jack

With the plough assembled with plenty of time to spare I could experiment with the Ferguson Tractor Jack I had bought as Auction a couple of months earlier. I can’t remember why I only bought the back section. I have the front. With the right lower links fitted to the tractor (the original lwer links not new replacements like my tractor) it was easy to attach the jack.

So then the moment of truth the lift. Needless to say it all went according to plan both back wheels off the ground ready to either change the wheels or alter the track width.

It works and it works so well. You can see a movie below of the lowering process.

With the Tractor filled with TVO it was off to the plough field.

First Job marking out. one stake at either end and one in the middle. I measured from the next plot over about 15ft. I’m not sure in a real plough competition what this distance should be. I was on the start of a row and was only ploughing as a demonstration.

I am not sure what happened the as I made several passes up and down the field but somehow in the excitement and concentration I forgot to get off the tractor and take some pictures.

I was following the opening on Stubble start as recommended by the ferguson manual. opening on Stubble

This is a marke cotrat to opening on Grass. opening on Grass

So the first time I remembered to take some pictures I had completed the “Open”.

More to follow tomorrow night

Hi Tim,

Had the tractor out and running this enabled me to power wash it. This removed grease plus loose paint.

* Roy’s Tractor update

Posted on June 12th, 2009 by ploughmyfield. Filed under Roy's Tractor, TE-D20.

Roy has been working away on his tractor and has posted.

It appears the ball hitch on the back of the tractor is welded onto the back housing. Hopefully a bit of careful angle grinding should get it off.

/images/2009_06_11/BallHitch.JPG

You appear to have cracked the problem re tick over, Well done. Imanaged to work on the tractor removing the broken valve spring etc, I rang Gordon whom I purchased the tractor from and he will be dropping off the two front wheels in the near future. The existing ones are not correct and extra ones that are part of the deal, more parts have arrived air filter, hoses, ign warning light etc. The REPLACEMENT valve spring was under £4.00 from SILVER FOX SPARES, also a chrome nut and washer for the steering wheel will look better.

I have received the doc from the DVLA EDO 862 is now registered to me. HURRAH. Picture of some parts note that the ign warning light has a chrome bezel most now are black not original! Plus the top link is in good condition.

* Roy – I have a new Tractor!

Posted on June 1st, 2009 by ploughmyfield. Filed under Roy's Tractor, TE-D20.

Just after his 70th birthday I think my friend Roy is having a mid life crisis!
He’s bought himself a Ferguson TE-D20 tractor. (TED 219332) born 22/09/1951.
Roy’s report on his purchase.

It was originally registered  in Holland Lincs, has been in Lincolnshire all its life so far.It arrived on the back of a container lorry visible in one of the pictures, I have started it but it runs rough although no knocks. The  engine oil was  as thin as water due to parafin mix   with the oil at no pressure  so popped fresh oil in and the  oil pressure was up. I have ordered parts, air cleaner rubbers,
points,
ign switch,
ign light,
id plate (for the top of steering column)
oil filter,  it breaths through the dash grill   so that rubber is shaped,
bought spark plugs.

I have parked it   in the garage where it will remain over the summer. The tractor had been stored some years and is oily and dirty,   I have dismantled  the air filter etc  and stripped the paint off and will rust proof and paint in a under coat   so that i have started the process  of restoration, Next week I will fit the parts to get it running better.

There was an old V5 DOC  with the tractor so I have written to the DVLA hoping for the reg number  it is showing as still allocated to a ferguson on the internet .

Regards Roy.

* Jim’s Visit

Posted on March 24th, 2009 by ploughmyfield. Filed under TE-D20.

I had a great surprise on Saturday. About lunch time there was a knock on the door It was Jim who had driven over to show me how he was progressing with the mudguards on his TE-D20. The first couple of posts on this new site  (if you follow them back or click on the link on the right TE-D20) will take you to the posts all about Jim’s tractor. Roy another friend fixed Jim’s tractor for him after it hadn’t run for 12 years!

Well it was looking great and was running which is more than I can say for mine! He had done a really good job with the mudguards Following Jeff’s instructions from the Holland Brand website on fitting fenders.

Jeff’s fender article

I will also be following this article when it comes to fitting my mudguard skins. I will me looking for imperial bolts though!

I digress, here are some pictures of Jims tractor outside my house and also a movie of him driving off. The movie would have been longer and shown him starting the tractor but I forgot to press the record button. Oh well. It’s sounding great. I’m really warming to the petrol model.

Th bonnet is blue as this tractor was originally owned by a sports ground and that is the team colours.

* Going Home

Posted on December 8th, 2008 by ploughmyfield. Filed under TE-D20.

 Hi Tim,   the tractor and Jim arrived home safely   going Holmesfield and Ringinglow   then Nether Green.  very small picture  if i make it to large it will not email.

Roy.
See the clip here
That’s great news Roy now you can have your garage back to keep your car in. I think you’ve done a great job with that tractor. 12 years it’s taken Jim to get to this point and you’ve managed to get it running in a matter of weeks. Now all we need to do is find a TE-D20 for you to restore.

* Finished

Posted on November 29th, 2008 by ploughmyfield. Filed under TE-D20.

Hi All, I have sent an email to Jim but not had a reply yet. I told him the tractor could be collected apart from the ign warning light stays on the rest is ok, with the engine running the battery voltage increases so appears to be charging, I did not get the light to go off with your dynamo so maybe the control box or wiring are at fault. I am a bit stuck with that problem now.

Had a run up and down the road all ok recorded it on the camera video, but to large to email.

Speak to you soon Roy.

Hi all,  took the pump out today very dirty,had difficulty removing the top casing   used a block and tackle  to shift it, luckily Jim called  so gave me a hand very heavy could not  remove part of the lifting arms, the top was catching as we tried to lift off ,we had to get  them down a little way this was achieved     with the jack and a large block of  wood  to hit it with, went down just enough now the lid is off  piston ok control valve ok it is the arms, reasemble and try the hydraulic lift tommorow.  plus more down pressure  may get them moving.

Called in today to see Roy. ended up spending the afternoon there helping remove the hydraulic piston and arms. Had to give it a bit of application as was seized in up position so wouldn’t remove from the body. Lifted it out, removed split pin (2 inch nail) eased arms and put back. Progress is great. Photo shows Roy replacing bolts – note blurring to hands due to speed of movement! – Jim

Roy after taking the weekend off to go to the Newark Vintage tractor show has been busy again. after picking up some much needed supplies from the show Roy is straight back to it.
He can now start the tractor by using the starting handle.
Starting on the Handle

He now has the problem that the lower link arms are stuck in the up position even after attaching a weight to them to try to pull them down. Investigations will continue. no doubt a posting soon.

* Thermo – Stat

Posted on November 6th, 2008 by ploughmyfield. Filed under TE-D20.

Hi All.
The housing is installed plus a new radiator tap , the thermo connection is simply a threaded sleeve into a new housing, would fit existing old housing if not too corroded and if available?, all seem water tight.

Hi Tim,The head you had have collected from the remanufactures for your TE-F20 looks really good. Jims tractor is coming along  one or two  problems,   it requires a replacement thermostat housing due to corrosion, Using my old brake pipe kit i have made up a oil pipe to gauge  in copper looks better    the old connection was wrong as the new gauge was a male fitting. put some transmission oil   in and had the tractor running  not checked the transmission yet or the lift. Roy. More Wiring

Jim You better take a look at this!

Hello all, very near now to firing up, the earth battery lead as supplied was just slightly short.  So I made up a metal strap as photo and bolted both together behind  the metal panel, WiringThe thermostat housing  has some corrosion  where the  thermostat  screes in and seats.  Will try  a washer as photo, ThermostatThe offside picture shows the exhaust on plus petrol pipeTank On The dash photo shows the ign light I put this on what really is the wrong side but is nearer the ign switch,  the proper hole on the other side has been sealed. Ignition LightStill wanting a drain plug for the transmission but may try to start tomorrow. The tap now appears to be ok  no petrol leaks.

* Weekend Water Work

Jim The owner writesCalled over to see Roy at the weekend and found him at a crucial point – filling up with water for the first time in ~12 years. A couple of drips from hose joints, but nothing to worry about. Brilliant!The new skins have arrived at work so I will make a start on these this week. Another thing I need to sort is the cowling between fan and radiator as there isn’t one. If we can’t pick one up which I doubt as they are like hen’s teeth, are there any drawings with measurements so we can fabricate one?RoyRoy Filling The radiatorRoy has also been working on the electrics getting the wires from the battery to the starterElectricsRouting of the electricsMore Elactrics

* 6 hours

Posted on October 24th, 2008 by ploughmyfield. Filed under TE-D20.

Hi all,
had a good 6 hours on the tractor today. The new shells are standard  with aprox 2 thou wear  on the crankshaft journals  with a little oil on assembley no play in the big end not bad for a 1950 tractor. Sump on, oil in the engine, bits needed so not tryng to start the tractor  yet. I also refitted  the half shaft and  brakes  today.  Dismantled the parts 3 times to get the end float sorted. Sorry Jim bought to many shims has Tim got hub end float? need to sort the offside brake out not working correctly,the new [2nd hand ] brake rod went on ok  thanks to Fergiland.

Still need a transmission drain plug may get one at the Newark show.  8/11/08.

Regards Roy.

5 th On the bench.

* Getting On

Posted on October 16th, 2008 by ploughmyfield. Filed under TE-D20.

Hi All

Some good news the half shafts had leaked oil onto the brakes but originally it was a big job but with the tractor, there is a simple way as per photo

Half Shaft Seal

They slip over the shaft to stop oil getting out  as long as the bearing is pre oiled no problem. The next two pictures are a little out of focus. I will try to get some better shots. But I have been looking at the Oil pump

Oil Pump

I’ve also taken the sump off and had a look at the main bearings

Hi All
My name is Roy. I have agreed to try to get a friend of Tims TE-D20 running. looks better on the pic than it is  some work has been done. We pulled and  pushed  it up my steep drive in the rain but is now in. The picture doesn’t do justice to the steepness of the drive.
